  2. The main character is Despereaux. The challenge he faces is that everyone wants him to change his behavior, but he doesn't want to. Despereaux just wants to be who he is. Then, the Mouse Council sends him to the dungeon to face his fate.

    1. I agree Sipho faces danger in a smart way. Sipho's bravery is shown through making difficult choices and following what he knows is right.

  4. The main character is Desperaux, he loves the princess (princess pea), but the father of the princess (the king) does not except Desperaux. Desperaux had been taken to the dungeon because his OWN brother told on him.

From my research i found out that this story was taken place in the medieval period.

The tone I think is sad because Despereaux own brother had sent him to the dungeon. ex.on page 47 it says "Despereaux! The Mouse Council wants you" said Furlough. on page 50 "make way," said Furlough. "here he is. I've got him" Make way."

    1. I think the medieval setting is interesting. The castle that Desperaux and his family live in sounds intriguing. I can imagine the large rooms where Desperaux listens to the King play his harp, Princess Pea sing her melodies.
It's sad how the mouse council doesn't want to try to understand one of their own. The way they capture him and hold a quick trial makes me think of how scary it would be to convicted when you are really innocent.

  5. Sipho is a relentless boy who never gives up.While he is trying to survive he is independent and self sufficient. He has been through alot and the book is No turning back . Also sipho is very Relentless because he could've daid life in the streets is too hard, then he could've gone home. But he is standing his ground. Also he has been through alot because his step dad loves to drink and he is sometimes abusive. And his mother lost her job from the cafe so basically,no more money is coming in

    1. I agree that Sipho is relentless in trying to find safety. He experiences danger on the street and finds people that support his courage. The setting of South Africa in the 1980's is a time when people there were trying to stand up for their personal freedoms. Here's an African webpage that shows a timeline of freedoms that were being fought for during the 1980's http://www.sahistory.org.za/1900s/1980s

  6. 1) The main Characters in the story are Keoko (sunhee), and Tae- yul (Nobuo).
    2) Describe the setting or background of the story (time period, culture, and family structure). Answer: It took place in Korea, 1941. In the story, Korea is taken over by the Japanese people, and is being forced to change their names to Japanese names!
    3) What is the tone of the story so far? (does it feel tense, exciting, sad, support with examples) The tone of the story so far, is angry, very tense, and somewhat sad. Ex: See how serious she looks? It’s because they have to change their names by force!!! Would you like to change your name?

    1. It was unfair that Keoko and her brother had to change their names during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Their identity was being taken from them. The tense tone of this setting seemed to be felt by the way soldiers treated Koreans. The stories of how people's lives changed seems sad. http://www.asiapundits.com/regions/korea/my-korean-grandmothers-memories-of-the-japanese-occupation-and-the-korean-war/

  8. 1- The main character in Despereaux is Despereaux . The challenge he has to faced was that he was forced to the dungeon and was made fun of because of his ears and how he was so small. Also he fell in love with a princesses that he was forbidden to love.

2- The setting of this story is the middle ages because the story mentioned things about nights. Despereaux'S family was a family of mice.

3- The tone of the story so far is tense and sad because he was sent to the dungeon because his dad told on him and Despreraux is going to get Thong in the dungeon.

    1. It was neat how Desperaux used his story telling abilities to get out of the dungeon. He really surprised the mouse council upon his reemergence from the dungeon. The way that Desperaux keeps fighting for what he believes in connects to some of the other stories that are mentioned on this blog. In No Turning Back, Sipho also struggles when he is thrown in the river by the police. Likewise, in When My Name Was Keoko, they are forced to give up their language and live in a fearful state. The characters also face difficulty in their own families as they struggle for freedom.
